Karen Sings at Cork’s 100th Eucharistic Procession
On Sunday 7 June 2026, Karen had the honour of singing at the 100th Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Cork City.
First held in 1926, the procession began as a prayer for peace and reconciliation following the War of Independence and the Civil War. A century later, thousands of people gathered to continue what has become one of Cork’s longest-running traditions.
The centenary procession began at the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne and made its way to Grand Parade. Despite the pouring rain, more than 5,000 people took part, alongside the many singers, musicians, clergy, stewards and volunteers involved in the occasion.
As part of the ceremony, Karen performed O Salutaris Ostia, an original composition by John Casey. John is Director of the Cathedral Choir and also teaches Karen’s daughter, Clara, at school, giving the performance an additional personal connection.
Singing a piece written by someone so closely involved in Cork’s cathedral music—and doing so for the centenary of the procession—made the occasion particularly meaningful.
An RTÉ Nationwide crew attended the procession, capturing the historic celebration and speaking with some of its organisers and participants. The resulting programme was broadcast on 5 August 2026 and is now available to watch on the RTÉ Player.
